Day 1: Juan Santamaría de San José Airport – La Fortuna

– Arrival and reception at the Juan Santamaría International Airport. Get ready to experience your first contact with the rain forests of Costa Rica. A private transfer will take you from the Juan Santamaría Airport to your luxury lodge in La Fortuna.

Free afternoon to explore the trails of the reserve, get to know the hotel, and take a relaxing bath in an outdoor heated Jacuzzi. If you feel like it, you can even plant a tree, to leave your grain of sand in place.

Day 2: La Fortuna

-Breakfast. In the morning, you will take a combined hiking tour in the Arenal Volcano National Park, and in the La Fortuna Waterfall. First, you will visit the trails of the Arenal National Park, taking a walk through the tropical forest. This walk will take you along the slopes of the Arenal Volcano, to the viewpoint of the park, where you can contemplate Lake Arenal and the volcanic remains of the Coladas de Lava 1968 trail.

-Afterwards, your guide will take you to the imposing 70-meter waterfall of the Fortuna River. Where after a short walk, and a descent of more than 480 steps, you can bathe in its refreshing waters. After finishing the tour, you will be returned to your hotel, and you will have the afternoon free.

Day 3: La Fortuna

-Breakfast. Today in the morning, you will visit the Maleku indigenous reserve. In this reserve, there are 3 different towns, which are called Palenques Margarita, Tonjibe, and El Sol. All within a territory of 2993 hectares and a population of 1000 inhabitants, 80% speak the dialect known as Maleku Jaica. After 1 hour of traveling through the northern plains, you will arrive at Palenque Tonjibe, where you will be greeted by the locals. After a short presentation, you will begin a walk through the town, to learn important details of the place, such as the way in which they bury their dead, the type of palenque that they built in ancient times, crafts as a way of subsistence today, the use of cocoa in their agriculture, and the way they created their clothing. Later, you will continue with a walk along a small path of 600 meters in the forest, to receive information about the medicinal plants and trees that their ancestors used, and which they currently take advantage of. At the end of the tour, you will go to a palenque where you will taste a typical Costa Rican lunch, with a Maleku touch.

-After finishing the tour, you will be returned to the hotel and you will have the rest of the afternoon free.

Day 4: La Fortuna – Manuel Antonio

-Breakfast. An eco-transfer with a tour included will pick you up early today to take you to your hotel in Manuel Antonio. As there is a long way, in the middle of the journey, you will make a stop for a crocodile boat tour on the Rio Grande de Tárcoles. This famous river inhabits the largest population of American crocodiles in Central America. Once you have reached your destination, at the beautiful Hacienda Nosavar, you will start a journey in a wagon towed by a tractor, crossing the Hacienda for 20 minutes, until you reach the banks of the Tárcoles River. From there, you will sail for about an hour, in safe and comfortable boats, in mangrove areas near the Carara National Park, which has an important population of Red Limpets. You will navigate through the mouth of the river, and areas near sandbanks, where you can observe aquatic birds such as the Martin Pescador, Herons, Roseate Spoonbills, and incredible crocodiles in their natural habitat.

At the end of the tour, you will taste a delicious typical lunch, and then continue the trip to the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio.

Day 5: Manuel Antonio

Breakfast. Today they will pick you up around 08:00, to enjoy a 5-hour catamaran tour, along the coastline that goes from Quepos to Manuel Antonio. On the tour, you will see islets, scenic cliffs, and incredible rock formations. The tour includes lunch, and you will have the opportunity to snorkel in the Bay of Biesanz. This activity can be done in the morning and in the afternoon, except in the rainy season, which only operates in the morning.

Day 6: Manuel Antonio

-Breakfast. Today you are going to visit the mountains of Santa Juana, to continue knowing the rural heritage of Costa Rica. You will enjoy a guided walk through the forests and jungles of the Cordillera de Talamanca, you will cross palm plantations and you will be able to cool off in its rivers and waterfalls. You will visit a typical village farm, you will learn about its history and you will be able to plant a tree, taking home its adoption certificate. To finish, you will be able to taste a typical peasant lunch, prepared by members of the community, inside the farm.

Day 7: Manuel Antonio – Puerto Jiménez

-Breakfast. Today a private transfer will pick you up, to take you to your hotel in the Puerto Jiménez area. More precisely, you will go to the tropical jungle next to Matapalo, one of the most spectacular, remote, and wild beaches in Costa Rica. To make the journey more enjoyable, during the journey, you will make a stop for an artisan Gold tour, in Rancho Quemado. In this town, you will have the opportunity to learn about the artisanal extraction of gold, with rustic instruments. Rosa and Juan Cubillo will accompany you on this cultural tour, through a historical review and a practical demonstration, to reveal the secrets of this valuable metal.

At the end of the tour, you will continue on your way to your next accommodation.

-Luggage weight on Fly Sansa and Aerobell flights: These companies with the reservation of a Premium ticket, allow up to 18kg in checked luggage and 4.54kg in hand luggage. Always subject to space and availability. With higher weights apply additional charges.

-In some hotels, triple and quadruple occupancy is based on 2 Queen size beds in the same room. If privacy or single beds are required, request separate rooms or other options.

-Single travelers have important additional fees to book a single room.

-Once the reservation is made, if some hotel does not have availability, a hotel with similar characteristics will be offered, subject to availability of the hotels in the area. If there are no available rooms or hotels of the same category, alternatives with similar characteristics will be sought, in nearby destinations, or destinations with similar attractions and leisure options.

-When you also book international flights, with Ultimate Wild Trip: After the air voucher issue, international flights will be non-refundable and changes, when allowed, will have management fees imposed by the airlines. -When the trip includes transfers: When transfers pick up the client before the hotel breakfast time, there is the possibility of requesting a takeaway breakfast the night before.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTATION AND VISAS

-Before traveling, pay special attention to the entry and exit policies of each country, due to the COVID19 pandemic. Ultimate Wild Trip, is not responsible for the services not enjoyed, due to delays or retention of clients, in customs or stopovers in other countries, due to COVID19.

-To travel to Costa Rica, an identity document and a passport with a minimum validity of 6 months are required.

-It is the client’s responsibility to check the entry and visa requirements of the countries to which they are traveling or through which they are passing.

-Spanish citizens do not require a visa to enter Costa Rica and are allowed to enter the country for 90 days, without doing any paperwork.

-Pay special attention to flight stopovers in other countries, as they could be detained at customs and not arrive in the destination country on time. This could lead to loss of services already paid, without being able to opt for a refund.

-We remember that to visit the United States, it is necessary to be in possession of a digitized electronic-readable passport.

Since January 2009, travelers with flights with a stopover in the United States have been required to have Electronic Travel Authorization (ESTA). The airlines do not allow name changes, so it is very important to verify that the names provided are exactly the same as those reflected in the passport.

* In addition, recently, the US authorities have changed the regulations for the entry of tourists, so that all those who have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, or Syria since March 2011, must apply for a visa at the embassy (even if they have the ESTA previously granted) and will not be eligible for the tourist visa exemption program. This includes passengers traveling to other destinations, with a technical stopover in the United States.

On flights to or via the USA, it is mandatory to carry a smartphone or tablet charged.

-Citizens with passports of non-Spanish nationalities: Contact the respective Consulates and/or Embassies to find out the entry formalities required by the countries visited on the trip. Tourists from some countries must obtain a visa in transit to make a stopover in the United States.

Weather:

In Costa Rica we can distinguish two seasons:

-Rainy season or wet season: It is in winter from May to November.

-Dry season: It is in summer, from December to April.

Although there are great variations between different regions. The Caribbean slope has more rains during the year. The Pacific area, especially Guanacaste, is much drier. The temperature remains fairly constant throughout the year (between 23ºC and 30ºC) and with a high degree of humidity.

In rainforests such as Monteverde and El Arenal, there is a particular microclimate where rains are present throughout the year.

During the rainy season, the worst months to visit the Pacific area, especially the southern area, are September and October. In fact, the Corcovado National Park closes throughout the month of October and is when the most torrential rains occur. It is also when the country is greener and its fauna and flora most spectacular.

However, in the Caribbean area, in September and October, the rains are reduced and a dry season microclimate is created. In the same way in the Arenal Volcano area during those 2 months.

What to bring:

– Comfortable clothes with short and long sleeves and shorts and long pants for hiking (fresh and easy-drying fabric).

– Sweatshirt or light jacket. Some warm clothes for visits to volcanoes and mountainous areas. In areas such as the top of Monte Chirripó or volcanic peaks, at more than 3000m, temperatures easily drop below 10º and there are strong winds. In all mountainous areas over 700m, including San Jose, the nights are cool.

– Waterproof jacket or raincoat.

– Comfortable footwear for general use and footwear suitable for hiking in the mountains (non-slip sole).

– Swimsuit, bath towel.

– Plastic/leather sandals with foot and ankle support straps. Essential to get on the water boats.

– Flexible suitcase or mountain backpack and small daily backpack (20l-25l) for walks.

– Insect repellent and a small first-aid kit with the usual medication.

– Sun protection: cap/visor, sunglasses, sunscreen with a high protection factor.

– Flashlight or headlamp. Essential for shared mountain lodges or refuges and for night hiking tours.

– Binoculars: Optional. On naturalist tours, the guides always carry.

*Currency: The official currency is the Costa Rican colón. But it is possible to pay in US dollars USD. They are accepted almost everywhere. Keep in mind that the amount to be paid in dollars can always be significantly higher, due to rounding up. Credit/debit card payments are accepted in most shops and restaurants.

* Sea turtle nesting season:

-Tortuguero: Leatherback turtle, Green turtle, and Hawksbill turtle. Leatherback turtle and green turtle from March 1 to October 31. Leatherback and green turtle hatchlings are from April 1 to December 15. Tours operated from July to September

-Ostional Wildlife Refuge: Olive Ridley Turtle. All year-round, with a higher concentration from August to September. From January to April 15,000 turtles are concentrated in a space of 3 days a month, while from July to December the number of turtles increases to about 200,000, and the duration of the arrival to 5 or 6 nights.

-Las Baulas Guanacaste National Marine Park, in Playa Grande, Tamarindo: Leatherback Turtle. From October 20 to February 15, with a higher concentration in the months of December to January.

-Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge: Leatherback Turtle, Green Turtle, and Hawksbill Turtle. From March to June, with the highest concentration of nests between April and May.

-Nancite Biological Station, Santa Rosa sector, Guanacaste: Lora Turtle. Spawning from July to November. They can arrive between 5000 and 8000 turtles per night.

 * Whale watching season: The best place for observation is the part of the Pacific, and the areas with the most possibility of seeing whales are the Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita, and the Osa Peninsula area, in places like Corcovado, Drake Bay, and Golfo Dulce. They can also be seen in Quepos, Manuel Antonio, Tambor, and Peninsula Papagayo, in the Murcielago Islands sector. Humpback whales migrate through the region between July and November and then again between December and March. In Uvita, the reserve is full between August and October and between December and April.

What C02 footprint does my trip produce?

To calculate the CO2 footprint of a trip, we first calculate the percentage of sustainability of the trip, based on the environmental responsibility of their suppliers. To this percentage of sustainability, we assign a coefficient or numerical value, previously reduced. Subsequently, we multiply this coefficient by the total gross emissions, and we obtain the calculation of the final net emissions.
